SECRETS OF PASSING UTME - PROF

SECRETS OF PASSING UTME

“Proper preparation prevents poor performance” is a common saying that underscores the importance of adequate preparation before one can obtain excellent result from an examination. Youths need to appreciate the fact that they are in a race with multitudes where few winners emerge. Therefore, there must be utmost concentration and seriousness in preparation in order to be among the winners.
WRONG ATTITUDES TO AVOID
It is common nowadays to see a large number of those that have finished secondary school education waiting endlessly for admission into higher institutions. This is unpleasant, but unless access to tertiary institutions is increased,
there will continue to be lots of people waiting endlessly for admission. Admission has higher institutions has become so competitive that candidates have to be more determined, diligent and dogged.
A senior official of an examination body was quoted as saying, “Admission is not automatic because the spaces are not sufficient. You have to try again next time if you do not get admitted this year; it is the survival of the fittest”. It is unfortunate that many youths are not seeing it so.
Some of the wrong attitudes they exhibits include:

  •  Not reading with concentration. For example, some are busy watching films, videos, football-matches, television programmes, playing computer or handset games while reading.
  •  Selective preparation for entrance examination into the higher institutions. They fail to study according to the syllabus for the examination.
  • Spending much time on socializing with friends e.g. online chatting, posting on social media, late-night calls, and ‘pinging’ at the expense of effective preparation.
  • Laziness and idleness.
  •  Insisting on a particular course or institution without a willingness to consider other good alternatives.

BEFORE THE EXAMINATION DAY:
  • Commence preparation early enough and do not wait until a few weeks to the examination.
  • Get acquainted with the JAMB syllabus for the subjects chosen.
  • Test your level of understanding on the chosen subjects by attempting some past questions both computer-based and paper-based. Monitor the improvement in your scores as you practice more.
  • Identify the topics of the questions you missed, study those topics again until you are able to successfully answer questions set from them.
  • Practice in environment without distractions; similar to examination condition.
  • Join others in a disciplined study-group preparing for the same examination. This will enable you to exchange ideas and get more explanations on some tricky questions.
ON THE EXAMINATION DAY:
  • You must have sufficient sleep on the eve of the examination to avert nervousness in the examination hall.
  • Find out the venue of the examination early enough and be familiar with how to get there in time.
  • Obtain the examination requirements and keep them safe.
  • Keep to yourself, be composed and avoid being frivolous.
  • Pray and believe God for success.
