WRITING A COMPUTER-BASED EXAMINATION - PROF

WRITING A COMPUTER-BASED EXAMINATION

A Computer-Based Examination is a type of examination administered through the use of Computer. This type of examination is commonly referred to as Computer-Based Test (CBT). CBT is delivered in objective formats. In CBT, the computer displays each question with its associated options where the candidate is expected to select his choice of answer and then move on the next question. The computer also displays a timer to help candidates keep track on the timing of the examination and would end it automatically when the time elapses.
In 2014, the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Nigeria introduced the use of CBT in the conduct of its examinations. Many examination bodies are presently adopting this system to examine their candidates. This is the reason why students should know more about it.
 Preparing for a CBT
Preparing for a Computer-Based Examination is similar to preparing for any paper based examination. One very vital point in CBT preparation that differs from the paper-based examination preparation is that the student’s preparation must include the use of CBT Practice Application or Test Simulation software. The use of the CBT practice software will help the candidates to master the art of taking examinations with computer before the actual examination. It helps to monitor their time usage. If this area is neglected, it could lead to increased tension as the student may not know what to do in certain circumstances. This has led some candidates to mistakenly click the SUBMIT or END button when they are yet to complete their examination.

Therefore, candidates preparing for Computer-Based Examination should do the following before the examination day:

  •  Read and study adequately using the examination syllabus as guide.
  • Attend additional coaching classes where necessary.
  • Form study groups with positive minded candidates.
  • Be smart to ask questions or seek clarification on topic that needs further explanation.
  • Get and solve past questions on the examination.
  • Practice past examinations questions using CBT simulator software. It will help to evaluate your scores instantly, monitor your time usage as well as track your progress in subject areas. It also helps you to simulate your examination experience from home.
